Wood Stoves

Ask anyone with a wood stove and they will tell you that there is nothing like real wood heat.

In picking a wood stove, be sure to check the efficiency rating – anything over 70% is good. Wood burning has been proven to be a carbon-neutral heating source, however higher efficiency ratings will mean that you will save up to 1/3 of the wood you are used to burning with your older, inefficient wood stove. Also, consider whether you want a stove made of steel, cast iron, or soapstone. Steel delivers high amounts of heat in a short period of time but it also cools quite quickly when you stop supplying it with wood. Cast iron and soapstone provide more comfortable, even heat over much longer periods of time – they are also significantly more expensive than steel to produce, meaning that cast iron and soapstone inserts will tend to cost more.

A wood stove can be installed practically anywhere you like in your home with remarkably low clearances to combustibles as compared with wood stoves in the past. In choosing the best location, you will need to consider the positioning of the black pipe (used in the same room as the stove) and chimney (stainless steel pipe packed with insulation used for all points outside of the room the stove is in). The pipe and chimney can run straight up off the stove through the roof, or, if the stove is on an outside wall, it can go out and then up. Either way the chimney needs to extend two feet higher than the point on the chimney which is horizontally ten feet from the roof (our estimator will perform this calculation). If you already have a masonry chimney, it is possible to use this to vent your woodstove, although it will most likely require the installation of a liner. You will also need a non-combustible hearth pad to sit underneath your stove for ember protection and, for some stoves, protection from radiant heat. The dimensions of the pad will vary, depending on the size of the stove. Hearth pads can be constructed using cement board and tile if only ember protection is required. If radiant heat is an issue, the best solution is usually to purchase a pre-made hearth pad.
